An Indian Army jawan was brutally assaulted by toll staff at Bhuni Toll Plaza on the Meerut–Karnal highway in Uttar Pradesh, sparking outrage and strong action from authorities.
The incident took place on August 17, when Kapil Kavad of the Rajput Regiment was on his way to Delhi Airport to return to duty in Srinagar after leave. Stuck in a long queue, he reportedly showed his service ID and requested quick passage, but toll workers not only refused him but also turned violent. In a shocking escalation, several staff members tied him to a pole and beat him with sticks, while hurling abuses—a scene captured on video that soon went viral.
Police have arrested six employees so far and are scanning CCTV footage to identify more attackers. An FIR has been filed under serious charges, including attempt to murder and unlawful assembly. Kavad’s family said 10–12 people were involved and have demanded strict punishment.
The National Highways Authority of India has imposed a ₹20 lakh penalty on the toll collecting agency, M/s Dharam Singh, and started proceedings to terminate and blacklist it from future operations. The authority condemned the behavior and promised measures to ensure safer highways.
The assault triggered public anger, with villagers staging protests at the toll plaza. Extra police have since been deployed to maintain order. The Indian Army’s Central Command also strongly condemned the attack, assuring that justice will be pursued.
